    ΜΕΛΕΤΗ ΠΡΟΣ ΜΕΘΥΣΟΝ. / ΠΡΟΘΕΩΡΙΑ. / Ἀνὴρ τις οἴνῳ χαίρων ἐπιεικῶς, γυναῖκα ἔχων, ἐπεθύμει παῖδά τε ποιήσασθαι καὶ τὸν τρόπον ὅμοιον ἑαυτῷ. Τῆς δ᾽ ἐπιθυμίας μὴ τυγχάνων, ἔθυσε τοῖς θεοῖς πολλάκις. Τῶν δὲ ἐπαγγειλαμένων τὴν ἐπιθυμίαν αὐτῷ ἐκπληρώσειν, συλλαβοῦσα ἡ γυνὴ ἔτεκεν υἱὸν. Τοῦτον ἰδὼν ὁ πατὴρ πρὸς τὸν οἶνον εὐθὺς ἐκ παιδὸς ἀπεχθῶς ἔχοντα, τήν τε μητέρα δι᾽ ὑποψίας εἶχε, καὶ αὐτὸν ὁρᾷν οὐκ ἠνείχετο. Ἀνδρωθεὶς ὁ παῖς, καὶ τὴν τοῦ πατρὸς πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀηδίαν συνεὶς, εἰς ἑτέραν ἀποδημήσας χώραν, ἐκεῖ τὴν ἰατρικὴν κατάκρας ἐξήσκησε. Λοιμοῦ δὲ ἐπισκήψαντος τῇ τούτου πατρίδι, ὁ δῆμος αὐτὸν ἐπὶ θεραπείαν ἀνακαλεῖται, ἐπαγγειλάμενος αὐτῷ, ἀντ᾽ ἄλλης τινὸς ἀμοιβῆς ὧν εὖ πείσεται παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ, τὴν ἡγεμονίαν τῆς πατρίδος ἐγχειριεῖν. Τούτων ἀκούσας, ἐπανῆκεν αὖθις εἰς τὴν αὑτοῦ, οὐ μικράν τινα φιλοτιμίαν εἰσενηνοχὼς τῇ πατρίδι τὴν τέχνην. Ἐν ταύτῃ τοίνυν καὶ τὸν αὑτοῦ πατέρα εὑρὼν ὑπὸ τῆς ἄγαν ἀπληστίας τοῦ οἴνου οὐκ ἐῤῥωμένως ἔχοντα τὸ σῶμα, πάντα καὶ ποιῶν καὶ λέγων διετέλει, ὥστ᾽ ἀποσχέοθαι πεῖσαι τοῦ οἶνου· ὁ δ᾽ οὐδὲν μᾶλλον προσεῖχεν αὐτῷ τὸ νοῦν. Κελεύει τοίνυν ὁ παῖς τὰς ἀμπέλους ἁπάσας προῤῥίζους ἀνασπασθῆναι δημοσίας γε οὔσας.
